In the 1760s Wilhelm Luttmer (* 1736) and Georg Luttmer (* abt. 1739) came to Rieste, a rural village about 20 miles north of Osnabrück, where they settled. On February 22, 1767 the first Luttmer was mentioned in the Rieste church records: Wilhelm Luttmer got married. The following year the wedding of Georg Luttmer took place. However they were related, they were the founders of two Luttmer families in Rieste.

Today the huge family with all its branches and different spellings is spread out all over the world. Besides Germany descendents of these two Luttmers mainly live in the Netherlands and the United States. But we also find them in Canada, Great Britain, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Egypt, Aserbaidschan, India, Japan and Australia. There are probably more family members in other coutries that we don’t know of so far.

Most of the emigrants of the 19th century went to America, one Luttmer settled in the Netherlands, another in Poland. In the United States many Luttmers changed the spelling of their name, mainly because they didn’t know how to write their name properly, so that the American officers just went by the sound of the name. Today we find Luttmer, Lutmer and Litmer over there. In Germany there are two different spellings: Luttmer and Lüttmer.
